At its core, solar panels take sunlight and turn it into electricity you can actually use in your home.
Here’s how it works:
Sunlight hits your solar panels
They’re made with special materials (usually silicon) that get excited when the sun shines on them.
That excitement creates an electrical current
This current is direct current (DC), but your home needs alternating current (AC).
Your inverter steps in
It flips DC into AC so your fridge, TV, and A/C can actually use it.
Your home uses solar energy first
If you’re producing more than you need, extra power gets pushed back to the grid.
The grid becomes your backup
At night or on cloudy days, you still pull from the grid — just a lot less.
California used to reward solar customers generously for extra power sent back to the grid.
Under NEM 2.0, you got full retail credit for every kilowatt-hour (kWh) exported.
Now, under NEM 3.0:
You get about 75% less credit in most cases
Exporting extra energy isn’t the golden ticket it used to be
Self-using your solar, or storing it with a battery, is the new smart move
Translation:
If you don’t have a battery or a smart solar setup, your savings could be much lower than expected.
✅ Yes — if you design it smart.
Solar still slashes your utility bill
Panels help protect against rising electricity rates
Batteries let you store your own power instead of selling it back for less
In other words:
Solar isn’t just about savings — it’s about control.
At Rebel Energy Systems, we design systems that work with NEM 3.0, not against it.
We make sure you:
Keep more of your energy
Cut your bills
Own your power
No cookie-cutter systems. No bait-and-switch promises.
Just real energy independence built for today’s California.
What happens after I book?
We’ll confirm by text/email and send over a few tips to help you prep.
You don’t need to do anything else.
Is solar still worth it?
Absolutely! With some caveats.
1. You average electric bill is over $200 a month and the home is not receiving a discount from the utility.
2. You want to save money.
Since the state-wide changes in April 2023, it is near impossible to make an electric bill $0. You can expect to pay a small amount to the utility every month. We take this amount into account when designing and will be able to give you an estimate for an amount the utility will charge.
Getting a battery is going to allow you to keep more of the energy you produce, meaning you give less to the grid while requiring less from the grid.
When we meet with you, our consultant can share different options.
Not at all!
Lately, leases are becoming the more financially beneficial option for homeowners but we do not push any option. After we assess your needs, we share all relevant options with you and are available to help you determine what aligns best with your goals.
